The American Crisis (Part 11)

The American Crisis

The Gospel should serve as the believer’s foundation of faith.
James A. McMenis

The core of the American Crisis centers around this statement: Our world, specifically the education industry, has become focused on best practices and research-based approaches. The crisis we face in America today stems from the idea that while the Gospel is vital, we need to add all these other thoughts and ideas to it. Let me be clear about what I’m trying to convey in this blog. I pray you continue reading, but it can be summed up simply:

The Gospel is ALL that is needed!

Period. No questions asked. I don’t need to depend on educational research to tell me that each person is created differently. I don’t need research to tell me that people are born inherently sinful. I don’t need research to establish new methods for raising children. I only need the Gospel—the Word of God. That is all I need.

This raises the question: why then do you use and quote research? I am not double-minded on this issue. I believe research is valuable and can be useful, but only if it aligns with Biblical truth. Let me explain with an example. Psalm 139, written by King David long before the birth of Jesus, speaks of concepts that were not scientifically understood at the time. David writes:

“My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.” Psalm 139:15-16

When David wrote this Psalm, sonograms did not exist. There were no images of babies in the womb. In fact, when my wife was pregnant with our children, we couldn’t even see 3D images of our sons, nor could we find out the baby’s gender as easily as we do today. Now we have gender reveal parties. Science has finally caught up with the Word, but the Word doesn’t need science to prove it—science proves the Word. Even if science were to disagree with the Word, such as in the case of Creation, it does not make science or research correct.

Our society has shifted from a Gospel-centered truth to a science- or society-centered truth. This is the American Crisis. In the name of progress and growth, we have allowed our schools to become more research-based than Gospel-based. I have been convicted by this in my own life. I have found myself falling into this trap. How do I teach, mentor, lead, and disciple in a modern way? I have concluded that I do not need to be modern. I need to be biblical.

The question we need to ask ourselves is: What is motivating my decisions and direction? If research, best practices, and instructional strategies are used in today’s educational systems, are they derived from biblical truth? While this blog will not address that concern directly, it is my greatest argument against the idea of Common Core. If what we are teaching our children does not come from sound biblical doctrine, it has no place in the educational process. I am concerned that education has become focused on advancing societal and governmental agendas, rather than Jesus and eternity above all. The American Crisis is saturated with agendas that divide and destroy, exactly as the Word says the enemy thrives at doing.

This is the American crisis
