The American Crisis (Part 12)

The American Crisis

The Church is to equip its members to be obedient to God alone.
Erwin W. Lutzer

Growing up, there was a kids’ song that went, “Obedience is the very best way to show that you believe.” I remember this line many years later, and I’m so thankful my parents raised me with music that instilled biblical values. Obedience to God today means standing firm on His Word and representing it in a way that others can see we are Christ followers. However, in today's world, obedience has become relative—it’s based on how you feel or interpret things. Children are raised to question everything, challenge every system, and create their own set of beliefs and values. Worldviews are self-created, not based on absolute truth.

How did we arrive at this point in society? We stopped believing in the sufficiency of Scripture. We began to trust that social agendas, especially education, could lead us to a better path. Just look at the current state of culture, where society, and even the church, seems to have lost its way, forgetting that God alone is enough for all that ails us.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” John 5:24

When Jesus made this statement, He expected us to understand that hearing God's Word and acting on it (obedience) would help solve the world's problems. Every problem is ultimately a sin problem. When you try to correct societal issues by creating new divisions or agendas, you end up repeating the same mistakes. What Jesus tells us is simple: He is enough. He is the only solution for broken relationships, societal flaws, and every problem we face.

“And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.” Exodus 3:13-14

When the Israelites faced problems, the answer was “I Am.” God, who is I Am, provided for all their needs, as long as they relinquished control and relied on Him. In our culture, we believe we are the most educated people ever, armed with knowledge in science, psychology, and human behavior. We’ve conducted studies, performed experiments, and believe we can solve any problem. But this is the American Crisis: we are too educated for our own good. Instead of surrendering control to our Creator, we rely on ourselves and seek answers among creation rather than Scripture.

“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” Jude 1:3

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” Colossians 2:8

“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:7-14

In America, we focus on seeking reform rather than revival. Reform won’t solve issues like social injustice, police reform, or economic struggles. You can’t change people’s hearts through new policies or systems. The only One who can truly change hearts, minds, and souls is the Creator. That’s what revival is. When our nation and world turn to Jesus Above All, we’ll experience a revival in our hearts, souls, and minds. Rather than seeking solutions created by man, I choose to serve the Creator and embrace His method of heart transformation. We need revival, not reform.

This is the American crisis
