The Election and 2020 (Part 2)

What do elections remind us of?

In the previous blog, we saw that elections teach us three things:

  1. That there is nothing new under the sun.
  2. That times are not the worst they have ever been.
  3. That whoever is elected falls under God’s authority.

Elections not only teach us, but they also remind us of something very important. This is a conversation that must be had with our children. What elections remind us is that man is broken and lost without a Savior. I could end this blog here, and I believe we would all agree with this truth. However, that would mean that every election only teaches us despair. What lies on the other side of despair? Hope.

Several elections ago, the theme of one candidate was "hope and change." I did not care for that theme, not because of the candidate or the party they represented, but because it offered the idea that the only hope America had was to elect them. Hope in a person is not the hope I want my children and household to look to. We live in a culture today where the term "woke" has become the newest idea of hope. In many families and churches across America, people claim to have been “woke” by society. My prayer is that our families are “woke” by the Holy Spirit alone and rest in the hope of Jesus Christ. The only hope that America needs is Jesus. The only hope for our country is Him. This is what elections reveal—that man is broken and lost without the hope that Jesus offers.

Jesus offers us the hope of glory.
“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,” Ephesians 1:18

Jesus offers us hope of the gospel.
“If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;” Colossians 1:23

Jesus offers us the hope of eternity.
“But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.” I Peter 5:10

This is what we need to teach our children. Hope does not come from any election. Hope does not come when the economy is strong. Hope does not come when government is big or small. Hope only comes from Jesus, and we are called to rest in that hope. This directs us to vote for candidates who believe in the hope of Jesus and defend our right to worship Him alone. We cannot allow our children to see us vote in a way that contradicts this message of hope in Jesus. Elections can make this difficult, but our children must see us exercise our right to vote in alignment with biblical truth.

Elections teach us to place our hope solely in Jesus while voting for truth. Elections can be challenging times, but they don't need to be as divisive as they have become. Let us be challenged to sit down with our children and have deep, biblical conversations with them about where our hope ultimately lies. Let us then have the courage to vote biblically, so that our children see us living out what we are teaching them.

Elections remind us that hope in Jesus, alone, is all that is worth living for.
