This is the Way (Part 1)

The Way Created

From the beginning of time, it has always been about loving the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This relationship was established in the garden when God first began to walk and talk with Adam. Genesis 2:7 speaks of God “breathing” life into Adam, making him a living soul—a soul capable of making decisions, leading, accepting responsibility, and having a relationship with the Creator. When God created man, He waited until the conclusion of creation because He knew He had something special and uniquely designed for man to accomplish. All of creation before man was designed to bring glory to God, but also to serve the well-being of man. Man was then given direct instructions to take dominion over creation and to be fruitful, multiply, and replenish the earth. Every step of creation was uniquely designed with purpose.

Can you imagine being Adam, walking with God in the morning and evening? Can you imagine being Adam when God told him to name all the living creatures? Can you imagine walking by the two trees in the garden with God and hearing Him say that every tree in the garden is for you, except this one tree, which is for God alone? In this state, Adam was the most blessed human to have ever walked the face of the earth—no sorrow, no pain, no hate, no division, no fear, no worry; only comfort, peace, fellowship, and joy. This was the way! This was God’s original plan for man until man decided to walk away from the created way.

“So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.” Genesis 3:24

The original way for man was to live in the garden God created and walk daily with Him in the morning and evening. But man, like the fallen angels before him, sought a different way and created a plan they believed was better. In creation, the way was to have direct fellowship with God. But after the fall, the way would need to be redefined, and a Savior would need to be sent. Through the fall, man became eternally stuck in a fallen state, and this division quickly escalated, as seen between Cain and Abel.

“Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.” I John 3:12

God made man leave the garden and told him he could no longer occupy and enjoy it. Adam loved the place and was unwilling to leave, so God made him go. This signified the shutting out of Adam and all his descendants from relationship with God. However, man was not sent to a place of torment, but rather to toil in the ground from which he was taken. Adam and Eve were shut out from the privileges of their state of innocence, yet they were not left without hope. Though the way to the tree of life was removed, and they lost peace, abundant life, and happiness because the covenant command was broken, God revealed to Adam and Eve the curse of their actions (Genesis 3:14-21) not to cause despair, but to point them to life and happiness through the promised seed.

This new state showed that life and salvation would not be accomplished unless the law and justice were satisfied. No longer could the works of keeping the garden, naming the animals, and replenishing the earth be enough. Only through Christ—THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE—could our lives be rescued. The covenant of works was broken, but another way was opened to have a relationship with God. That way came through the work done on the cross by Jesus alone. The created way opened the door to the eternal way! Hope came through the broken body and shed blood of Jesus.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6
