The Way Created
From the Old Testament to the New, "The Way" to live for Jesus has been clearly defined. Since Creation, just over 6,000 years ago, this path has led all mankind to the same conclusion. As we discussed last week, "The Way" ultimately boils down to this: to bring God glory in all we do. That sounds wonderful, and it certainly feels good, but how do we live it out practically?
“You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.” Deuteronomy 5:33
“So you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him.” Deuteronomy 8:6
“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,” Deuteronomy 10:12
Since the law was first given, we’ve been commanded to walk in His ways. Living for Him is not just a lofty idea; it’s a top priority. We execute this practically by submitting our lives to His authority and control. We come to understand that our life is not our own, but that we are here for a higher purpose, a greater goal, and a divine objective. We were created to experience life at its fullest and to bring Him glory. But, living this out practically can be challenging. Life throws curveballs, moments of doubt, and times when we feel unworthy of such a high calling. Life includes both valley and mountaintop moments. So, how can we stay faithful to follow Jesus on the path He has called us to?
It starts by recognizing that the call on our lives is unique. It’s a call tailored to our personality, talents, and gifts. Walking in the way Jesus has called you to doesn’t mean following a generic path like everyone else. Recently, my family and I visited Northern Michigan to experience the breathtaking beauty of the changing seasons. It was truly amazing. We took some of the most beautiful pictures I’ve ever captured. When we returned, friends who saw the photos on social media commented that they never knew Northern Michigan was so stunning. One person said that as they looked at the pictures, they realized each one was unique. It wasn’t just one location taken over and over again, but a collection of many different spots, each beautiful in its own right.
Our lives are the same to our Creator. He sees each of us as unique, like individual pictures in a collection of billions, each demonstrating beauty in its own way. This is "The Way."
God designed each person to walk a unique path—not one that mimics those around us, but one that is set apart for His purpose and glory. Not every person experiences life in the same way or walks the same journey. We each have a distinct design, called to bring God glory. We do this by following the commands in Deuteronomy 8:6 and 10:12: walk in His ways, fear Him, love Him, and serve Him with all our heart and soul. This is where we start—by giving everything to Him. We don’t hold anything back. We acknowledge that He is the Creator of all, and He has given everything to us. Just like every photograph of the changing seasons is unique, every person created by God is unique, with a specific purpose and calling.
As you follow your unique calling, remember that life will not always consist of mountaintop experiences. As followers of Jesus, we’ve been sold a lie that living for Him means always being on the mountaintop. This is simply not true. If you search for pictures of valleys and mountain peaks, you’ll see beautiful views, but there’s a key difference. In pictures, valleys are lush, green, and often feature flowing water—close-ups that reveal intricate beauty. Mountain peaks, on the other hand, are majestic from a distance, but up close, they are barren, rocky, and devoid of trees or water. When we walk through life’s valleys, we often complain, longing only to be on the mountaintop. But in reality, it’s the valleys that offer the greatest beauty of life.
Perspective is everything. We’re called to walk in His Way, not our own. We are called to give Him our entire life, not just parts of it. We must understand that the path leading to God’s glory was uniquely designed the moment we were created. My mountaintops and valleys will look different from those of anyone else I encounter. It’s in those valleys, though, that I must realize I am uniquely designed and called for a purpose. Those valleys are shaping me into exactly what God created me to be—nothing more, nothing less.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” Psalms 23:1-6
THIS IS THE WAY!
